Sale centre Lee Thomas is set to be out of action until the new year after dislocating his shoulder in his side's 32-15 win over Clermont in the Heineken Cup on Saturday.

The 24-year-old former Cardiff star was helped off the field just 12 minutes into the match in France.

Following tests, Thomas has been diagnosed with a "severe and complex dislocation of the shoulder".

Thomas will now undergo surgery on Wednesday at the Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle, with the club expecting him to be sidelined for three months.
