NZ mourn schoolboy tragedy

Wednesday 16th July 2008

A 17-year-old schoolboy who suffered a broken neck in a rugby match three weeks ago has died - the fifth New Zealander to die from rugby-related injuries since 2001.

Robert Hickland suffered his injuries in a tackle while playing for Feilding High School against Rathkeale College in New Zealand's central North Island on June 28.

He died on Tuesday in the spinal injuries unit at Burwood Hospital in Christchurch, family members said.

Hickland had played for New Zealand at U17 level.
