Otago name ANZ Cup squad

Thursday 28th June 2007

The Otago Rugby Union, embattled as they are with a flurry of their big name players leaving for overseas, have named a reasonable squad for the upcoming Air New Zealand Cup.

Loose forward Craig Newby will skipper the side, whilst Steve Martin is the coach and Glenn Moore his assistant.

27 players have been named in the squad - Craig Clare and James Ryan were not considered due to injury; and Anton Oliver, Carl Hayman and Nick Evans are all doing national duty.

The squad leaves next week for a training camp in Wanaka, on a high-altitude farm, where they will also be engaging in some community projects.

There are 17 Super 14 players contained in the squad, with many having played for the New Zealand Maoris, Sevens and Junior All Blacks to boot.

"We are pleased with the way in which the selections have come together," said Martin.

"The squad has a good mixture of youth and experience, and the leadership skills of Craig are outstanding.

"Every man in the squad is enthusiastic about the campaign, and all are looking forward to our training camp next week."

Otago squad:
