Carlo Del Fava and Tommaso Reato have been drafted into the Italy squad preparing to face France in the Six Nations in Paris on March 9.
Del Fava was cleared of misconduct at a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday, while Reato is in as a precautionary measure, as Mallett weighs up more options following the suspension of Mauro Bergamasco.
Del Fava was cited for a late hit on Welsh fly-half Stephen Jones during Italy's 47-8 defeat last Saturday, but the disciplinary committee believed the foul was not red-card worthy, and thus opted not to sanction the player.
Bergamasco, one of Italy's most influential players, was suspended for thirteen weeks after being found guilty of eye-gouging Wales full-back Lee Byrne.
Both Del Fava and Bergamasco had been left out of the squad pending the hearing, and Reato's call is as a result of the suspension that means Mallett can definitely now not call on Bergamasco.
